Bittersweet Decisions

Okay, so this one is not going to really fall into the theme of thinking for yourself and not drinking from the punchbowl like I would normally try to throw out there.  If you try really hard, you may be able to find some of true ethos of the Zone in it, but it will really be a stretch and tangential at best.

It has been a couple of weeks since the last posting here in the zone so I thank those of you who have come back from time to time to see what is happening.  It has been a we bit busy with the No Kool-Aid family of late and there has not been much time to allow any distractions.  It has all been internally focused on our punchbowl lately and I am glad that I finally have had the time, if all too short of it, to be selfish from all the outside distractions and simply concentrate on what the family needs and even, dare I say it, grab a little bit of relaxation.
The wife and I made a few decisions in the last coupe of weeks that are not only good for us, but are phenomenal for our kids.  Just this week, we packed up 90% of the house and moved them into an apartment in a completely different location.  This location shall always be undisclosed, but if ya know us, then ya know where it is.  Besides, the location is not all that important to the moral of this story.  It was a major player in where we decided to go, but for story sake, it is more about taking a risk and setting yourself up for the future.  So, despite the fact that we will be living apart for the foreseeable future, we will be much better off in that same future.

The benefits far outweigh the deficits of our choice.  Wifey has her third interview this week, tomorrow morning.  The first two went very well and we are expecting call backs on both of them.  The kids will be starting school next week and both are going to some pretty awesome schools.  The Teen will have a social life that we both feel he can be trusted to maintain with minimal control by us parental units, his school has over 30 extra-curricular activities in quite a variety of interest areas.  The apartment gives the kids something they have not had much experience with, open windows.  One of the benefits of a third floor walk-up (definitely not a benefit when it comes to the furniture).

So this weekend I will return to the permanent duty station that the Zone resides in for the next couple of years.  I will pick the dogs up from the kennel and head home to a house that echoes because there is next to nothing in it to absorb the sounds.  Over the next year or so I will be able to fix up those little ankle biters around the house that are just not worth the time when you have the family to have fun with.  Hopefully, in the next year we will get to reverse rolls and I will move into an apartment while they move into what will be our next/last house.  One that has what we want in it, one that has the space a family needs, one that has enough ground for the dogs to run free on, yet is close enough to civilization for the kids to maintain their social lives.

I know full well, this complex decision is for the best.  Especially, when it comes to the kids.  Starting the retirement plan before I actually retire is going to give everyone a chance to settle in and get on where they want to be.  The surprises will be less, the benefits more.  Until I get to be with the familia on a permanent basis though, it will be a bittersweet decision, no matter how right I know it is.
